A Message from Tarik 'Konshens the MC' Davis
Halcyon Arts Lab Pilot Studio Program Fellow,
GRAMMY Recording Academy Artist & GRAMMY Museum Teaching Artist
I believe music is one of the most powerful ways to engage others. As a hip hop artist and songwriter, I use my craft to teach and inspire urban youth. Halcyon shares my mission to educate through the arts, so our partnership was a powerful match.
I was one of the pilot artists accepted to the Studios Program, a pilot program of the now Halcyon Arts Lab, and the only hip hop artist in my cohort. When I arrived, I expected just a recording studio. But what I discovered was a family-like structure of opportunity, advice and support — three things that are vital to any independent artist.
That’s when the excitement kicked in. With an entire building to create whatever I wanted, I recorded two new pieces and shot three videos in just a few months. The space and support I received from Halcyon fueled my creative process in a whole new way — and that became one of the most valuable treasures of my career.
Since my residency, my relationship with Halcyon has graduated into something I’ve been longing for — genuine collaborations that can ultimately benefit others. I look forward to joining forces again in the future to create more empowering experiences for young people.
