Phil Esterman studied Computer Science at Yale University, focusing on computational social science. Prior to founding StoryTime, he led social policy research at Yale, Harvard, and Columbia and worked for the U.S. House of Representatives. Phil also taught Head Start preschool, where the families of his students were struggling just to get their kids to school, let alone take a bus to check out books from the library. These parents inspired him to found StoryTime.
Venture: StoryTime sends free stories by text message and messaging apps to families without books. It has increased nightly reading by 160% and is 300 times cheaper than shipping paperbacks. Through U.S. Head Start, StoryTime is now working with 10,000 parents to get every family reading together and talking face-to-face.
