Senior Manager of Communications

Reports to: Executive Vice President (EVP)

Location: Washington, DC

Status: Full-Time

Salary Range: $85,000-$100,000 (commensurate with experience)

Halcyon supports early-stage, impact-driven entrepreneurs working in Climate, Health, and EquityTech. We host both global and domestic fellows and run regional fellowships in Latin America and the Caribbean as well as in Africa. Through tailored training, mentorship, and non-dilutive resources, we’ve helped over 570 fellows launch and scale ventures that have positively impacted millions of lives.

As the Senior Manager of Communications, you will report to the Executive Vice President (EVP), collaborate with stakeholders, and mentor a high-performing team—all while amplifying Halcyon’s mission to advance social entrepreneurship. In this role, you’ll lead comprehensive communication strategies while elevating our brand and thought leadership.

What We Need:

Strategic Communications & Brand Stewardship

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive communication strategy aligned with organizational goals.
  • Oversee brand positioning and maintain consistent messaging across all platforms.
  • Lead and mentor the communications team, ensuring a collaborative and high-performing environment.
  • Build Halcyon’s voice on key themes (including but not limited to Climate, Health and EquityTech). Our audience is varied and includes funders, founders and ecosystem leaders.

Thought Leadership

  • Proactively source opportunities for Halcyon leadership to build reputational awareness through speaking engagements, written op-eds, podcast and earned media interview participation, and social impact convenings including conferences.
  • Track developments in social entrepreneurship and impact investing to identify meaningful contributions Halcyon can make within the ecosystem.

Media & Public Relations

  • Manage press materials and media interviews.
  • Build relationships with media outlets and journalists to raise Halcyon’s profile with entities specific to our sector.
  • Prepare leadership and program teams for media interviews and public speaking engagements (internal and external), ensuring alignment with Halcyon’s messaging.

Digital Strategy

  • Oversee digital engagement efforts through content creation, social media, and email marketing.
  • Consistently update Halcyon’s website content, ensuring it serves as a vibrant hub for organizational news, program information, recruitment for fellows and thought leadership.
  • Utilize data and insights to drive audience engagement across digital channels. Use this to track performance and refine content strategies based on metrics and analytics.

Stakeholder Engagement & Partnership

  • Collaborate with internal teams, fellows, and external partners to build impactful communication strategies.
  • Prepare deliverables for key Halcyon partners (including things like co-written press releases and sharing fellow updates with external audiences as appropriate).
  • Train staff and Halcyon fellows in media engagement and public speaking.
  • Ensure effective communication within the organization and report on communication impact metrics quarterly as part of our reporting to the Board of Directors.

Who You Are:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, or a related field.
  • Experience: 5-7 years of experience in strategic communications, PR, or marketing, ideally in a mission-driven or nonprofit setting.
  • Expertise: Experience with communications in the social impact ecosystem strongly preferred, including but not limited to candidates with experience in health, climate or EquityTech.
  • Experience strongly preferred working with incubators and accelerators.
  • Digital Proficiency: Expertise in digital content management, social media, and using data analytics to refine strategies.
  • Skills: Proven track record of thought leadership support, including the ability to produce high quality written pieces and conference panel curation for executives and/or an organization.
  • Management: Experience managing teams and working cross-functionally with diverse stakeholders.

  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and meet deadlines. Represent Halcyon as another spokesperson at events and convenings to increase our visibility.
  • Creative thinker with a passion for social impact and entrepreneurship and interest in learning more about this evolving field.

Schedule and Work Environment

  • 8 hour shift, standard working hours are 9AM – 5PM
  • Monday to Friday
  • Weekends and evenings as needed
  • Work Location: Hybrid in Washington, DC 20007, with three days in the office and two days remote. Halcyon also offers two weeks of ‘Work from Anywhere’ time as an additional benefit.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds, comfortable with standing, climbing stairs, walking and sitting.
  • Some domestic and international travel may be required, up to 10%.
