Q&A with Mandy Bowman (Official Black Wall Street)

What inspired you to found Official Black Wall Street?

I was inspired to start Official Black Wall Street after learning about the history of Black Wall Street in Tulsa and other thriving Black business districts that were intentionally destroyed. That history—coupled with seeing how Black entrepreneurs today still struggle with access to funding, resources, and visibility—made it clear that something needed to change.

What does Official Black Wall Street do?

OBWS is a platform that not only makes it easier to find and shop Black-owned businesses but also gives them the tools and community to scale, sustain, and thrive in an economy that often overlooks them.

Who are some innovators and leaders that inspire you?

I’m inspired by trailblazers like Madam C.J. Walker, who built a beauty empire at a time when opportunities for Black entrepreneurs—especially Black women—were almost nonexistent. I also look up to business leaders like Robert F. Smith, who are using their wealth and influence to reinvest in Black businesses and communities.

What’s it like being part of the Halcyon community?

Being part of the Halcyon community has been an impactful experience. It’s a space where I’ve been able to connect with other mission-driven entrepreneurs, investors, and mentors, and refine my vision for OBWS. What I love most is the ongoing support I have received throughout the years from the Halcyon team and community!

What’s next for OBWS?

The OBWS Founders Club! This month, we launched our exclusive membership designed to give Black entrepreneurs the community, mentorship, and resources they need to thrive. This initiative is all about creating a strong, supportive ecosystem of like-minded founders. As we expand, we’re focused on bringing in more strategic and community partners and hosting exclusive events to continue fostering community.

What does Black History Month mean to you, and how does it inform your venture’s work this month and beyond?

Black History Month is a reminder of our resilience, brilliance, and the impact we’ve made despite the obstacles placed in our way. For OBWS, this month is about highlighting the stories of Black icons, increasing their visibility, and encouraging long-term support beyond just February. For me, this mission is something we focus on year-round, ensuring Black entrepreneurs continue to grow and thrive every day.

What are some of your biggest wins so far as a founder?

One of my biggest wins was launching the OBWS platform, which helped bridge the gap between consumers and Black-owned businesses in a major way. Another huge milestone was creating the OBWS Founders Club and providing a safe space for Black founders to build community. I’ve won a lot of awards for my work, but every time I hear from a business owner who tells me that OBWS helped them grow their business, attract new customers, or secure funding—it’s a win.

What does the future of business look like to you?

The future of business is digital, inclusive, and community-driven. I see a world where all entrepreneurs have equal access to capital, resources, and opportunities to build generational wealth. I also believe that conscious consumerism will continue to grow, with people prioritizing businesses that align with their values. Technology will play a major role in leveling the playing field, and I’m excited to see how platforms like OBWS continue to shape that future.
