Mark is a mechanical engineer from Uganda who is passionate about creating and delivering sustainable, life-changing products into the hands of millions of people. During his 3rd year at Makerere University, he founded a startup called Wet Technik that looked at effectively treating and recycling wastewater using low-cost nature-based constructed wetland technologies. He was able to pilot and sell these systems across Uganda. This work was pivotal in the startup becoming winners of the Big Ideas Contest, 3rd place in the Wege Prize 2019, and ClimateLaunchpad Global Finalists. In October 2019, he co-founded Hya Bioplastics.
Venture: Hya Bioplastics is a biotech startup that produces biodegradable packaging from re-engineered plant fibers and thermoplastic starch. Hya Bioplastics’ innovative process uses undervalued agricultural waste and cassava starch in addition to the invasive water hyacinth as key raw materials.
